Around 2007, The Ting Tings, with their insanely catchy pop hit, That’s Not My Name, announced themselves on the world stage from their base at Salford’s Islington Mill…Before rejecting the glitz…
The Tings Tings burst onto the chart scene in 2007 when their effervescent electro-pop debut single, That’s Not My Name, backed by a fluorescent video, sold bucket loads and was featured in ads, films and tv shows, so that no-one could escape it. The song, as well as the album, We Started Nothing, went straight to Number One, while over a decade later, That’s Not My Name went viral on TikTok, as film stars like Alicia Silverstone and Drew Barrymore used it to soundtrack to their reels.
Ironically, The Ting Tings – Katie from Wigan and Jules from Essex – first formed from their base at Islington Mill out of disillusionment with the record industry; which is what the hit song was about, and have since almost snubbed the limelight, declaring in 2012 that “It would be so easy just to bash out a cheap hit record, but we’re better than that.” Since then, there’s been three albums, Sounds from Nowheresville, Super Critical and The Black Light.
